Mary Lee Kippenhan, 86 formerly of San Jose, CA passed away peacefully on May 17, 2018 in Reno, Nevada. Born on April 20, 1932 to Mary Lee and Edwin Billings in San Diego, CA Mary graduated from Palo Alto High School in 1950. She and Dickson Hoogs (PAHS Class of '49 her high school sweetheart) married and had four children.

Following her graduation from Chico State College with honors, she moved her family to Cupertino, CA and began her teaching career at Luther Elementary School. She taught for 30 years. In 1965 she married Leland Glandon. They had a daughter together and moved to Daphne Drive, her home for the following 52 years. Mary was a devoted mother and grandmother, a dedicated teacher, an avid environmentalist and politically engaged. She met Dr. John Kippenhan at the Unitarian Fellowship. He shared her love of music and desire to travel. They married in 1983 and enjoyed 33 years traveling the world exploring art, music and architecture. John passed away in 2016. 


A celebration of Mary's life will be held on July 29, 2018 at 12:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Fellowship, 1112 Bernardo Ave, Sunnyvale, and on August 4, 2018, in Reno. Mary was greatly admired and loved. She will be remembered. Mary was predeceased by daughters Margaret Hoogs Fritchie and Elizabeth Glandon Fonseca and brother Robert Billings. She is survived by daughters Mary Katherine "Katie" Berg & Sally Lynn Smith; son Stephen Glandon (Peggy) Hoogs, stepdaughters Susan (Dan) Barnhart and Nancy (John) Rustad, son-in-law Alan Fonseca, brother Brandon Billings, sister Michele Garrison, sister-in-law Carolyn Billings, 13 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 7 nieces and a nephew.
