In Memory

Hugh G. Hefta - Class Of 1960

Hugh Gunder Hefta
May 29, 1942 - September 12, 2021

Gunder Hefta died in his sleep the morning of Sunday, September 12, 2021 from complications of Alzheimer's disease. Those who loved Gunder remember his intelligence, humor, warmth, enthusiasm, and kindness. His fascination with the natural world and its myriad creatures found greatest expression in his love for all things botanical. His bonsai, heritage apples, and scores of unusual plants continue to grace gardens everywhere Gunder had friends and family.
Gunder was born and raised in Palo Alto, CA. He studied English at San Francisco State University but did extensive course work in creative writing, biology and art. This background led to a career in publishing as an editor, first working for W.H. Freeman and Company and later for Harvard University Press. His authors and colleagues valued Gunder's skill and attention to his craft, which he plied with his distinctive combination of compassion and certitude.
He was known to do the New York Times crossword in ink. His passions ranged from poetry to social justice, from drawing with pastels to a love of Italian opera, baroque music, and jazz. His lifelong interest in cooking brought delight to the guests at his table. Most of all he loved and cherished his family and friends.
Gunder was predeceased by his brother Durham and is survived by his wife Marsha Onomiya Evans, his children Joseph Hefta (Melissa) and Meredith "Molly" Bright (Rob), four grandchildren, his sister Karen Scott, his brother Kevin Benner, and his extended family.
Donations in Gunder's memory may be made to the California Native Plant Society, where he was a founding member (cnps.org), or Collabria Care Alzheimer's Day Program, Napa (collabriacare.org). A memorial service is planned for 2022 in the Napa Valley where Gunder resided for the past 21 years.
