Respected Coach and Educator Wes Fisher

Wes Fisher was a championship coach and educator at Palo Alto High School for more than 23 years, passed away on May 18, 2021 at the Veterans Home in Yountville, California. A Palo Alto native, Fisher was born on June 22, 1924 to Charles and Ruth Fisher. He attended local elementary schools, and graduated from Paly in 1942, where he was a class leader and noted athlete, earning all-conference honors in football. Upon graduation, he joined the Army Air corps and flew single-seat fighters in World War II. Upon his return he graduated from San Jose State College, where he was a star running back in football, graduating with his teaching credential in 1949.

The following year he returned to Paly as a teacher and coach, continuing there for 23 years and achieving national prominence with championship wrestling teams, winning 10 league championships and 176 competitions. He was assistant football coach for three undefeated championship football teams, in 1951, 1956 and 1963. During his long career, he was respected as a motivator and leader, coaching  golf, swimming and track & field, as well as serving as athletic director.

He was predeceased by his parents were Charles and Ruth Fisher; his brother, Jack Fisher; and sister, Erma Stengel. He was married to Maxine Cline (deceased in 2004), and is survived by a daughter, Nancy and son, Brad; 2 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, 3 nieces, 3 great nieces, 1 great nephew, 3 great-great nieces and 1 great-great nephew. 

 

A tribute honoring Coach Wes Fisher and his longtime coaching colleague Hugh McWilliams will be held at Paly’s Hod Ray Field at 11AM on August 8, 2021.
