Audrey H. Hurley, age 88, passed away on Sunday, March 13, 2022, at Arroyo Grande Hospital in Arroyo Grande, Ca.

She was born on Oct. 14, 1933, in San Francisco, Ca., to George and Mayme (Hutchinson) Hurley and was the oldest of two daughters.

After graduating from Palo Alto High School in 1951, she attended Washington State University as an English major and met and fell in love with Thomas Wersen. They were married in San Francisco in August in 1953.

At the age of 48, after raising four children, she went to work full-time, and returned to school to earn her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Notre Dame de Namur University. Soon after, she continued her education and received her master’s in psychology at Santa Clara University in 1987 and worked as a school counselor at Palo Alto and Fremont High Schools. At the age of 61, she proudly received her Ph.D. in Psychology from University of San Francisco and was soon hired as a Professor at San Francisco State University teaching graduate students.

Upon retirement, she discovered a passion and talent for interior design, and with her eye for color, aesthetics, and savvy for quality designs, she enjoyed “flipping” a few gorgeous homes. Her final passion was found with paint brush in hand, creating works of art in oils or acrylics, while sitting by the oceanside in Carmel or on her patio with her colorful flowers and two cats. She enjoyed a hearty discourse in politics, art, music, or the intricate workings of the human spirit, and loved the enrichment of traveling the world, visiting most of Europe, Cuba and China.

She is survived by her sister Andrea Roveda; her four children: Margaret Mary, Diane Louise, Nancy Andrea and Thomas Hurley; nine grandchildren; and two nieces.

A Memorial service will be held Friday, April 22, 2022, 1pm at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in San Luis Obispo.
