Berton E. Ballard obituary, 1928-2021, Moraga, CA

Berton E. Ballard
August 28 1928 - Dec. 2, 2021
Berkeley

Born at Kaiser Hospital, Oakland, the son of Gertrude Garin and Berton J. Ballard, Bert was a graduate in chemistry from U.C. Berkeley where he was an Oski mascot and a coxswain on the crew, graduating in pharmacy. He then received his PharmD at U.C.S.F where he met his wife, Suzanne Strueben. They were married in 1953 in Berkeley. He became an associate professor at U.C.S.F. and then went on to become dean of the pharmacy school at the University of Rhode Island. He returned to California and graduated from U.S.F. law school. He authored a book on law library searches. Bert was predeceased by his wife, Sue, and his sons, Dean Ballard and Dale Ballard. He is survived by his daughter, Janis Sherer Ballard, son, Ian Ballard, and grandchildren Lisa Sherer, Sophie and Molly Ballard, and Kelsey and Garin Ballard. He was a loyal member of the New Orleans Jazz Club of Northern California (NOJCNC) and loved to dance and listen to their live jazz performances. He also was coxswain for the senior 8's at the Marin rowing club for many years. He and his family attended the U.C. summer camp, Bears Lair, which was a high point of summers for several generations of the family. We will especially miss his love of chocolate and his lively sense of humor. A private ash scattering ceremony will be conducted at sea on Dec. 27, 2021. Donations in his name can be made to the NOJCNC. (Send your check, payable to NOJC, to: Jim Broadstreet - 6415 Irwin Ct., Oakland, CA 94609. All contributions are tax free.)
