Recap - Generations Day

Recap: Generations Day brings double the rallies and double the spirit

Babies, greasers, sophisticates and senior citizens scrambled into the stands to watch the Day Four competitions held during an Advisory rally yesterday in the gym in addition to the usual lunch rally. All grades put up a good fight as the sophomores won the Ring Toss, the juniors took the victory in Name that Tune, and the seniors and freshmen tied for first place in the Three-Point Contest.

During the lunch rally, juniors and seniors competed against each other in the first round of the ring toss with the seniors taking a narrow victory.

Junior Hyunwoo Roh, who participated in the ring toss competition, has participated in this game with junior Josh Kasevich for the past three years. Although he and Kasevich later beat the freshmen in the consolation round, Roh expressed disappointment at losing to the seniors in the first round.

“It’s a little sad that we got matched up with them [the seniors],” Roh said. “I really wished the seniors got matched up with a different grade, and we got matched up with the other grade, so that we could meet the seniors in the final round … hopefully we’ll win our senior year.”

After defeating the freshmen in the following round of the ring toss, the sophomores and seniors faced off in the final, with the sophomores stealing the victory in a close match up.

The next lunch rally game was Name that Tune, during which a slow start for the seniors left the freshman, sophomores and juniors fiercely competing for first place. In the end, juniors pulled away with the victory.

For the second rally of the day, students headed to the new school gym during Advisory for a Three-Point Contest and performances by the Paly dance and cheer teams. After two years of construction to create the Peery Family Center, yesterday’s Advisory rally was the first indoor rally for many students.

The first round of the Three-Point Contest set the juniors against the freshmen. The freshmen sank buckets and won the round, upsetting the juniors.

Freshman Annika Shah, the female participant for the freshman class, played a key role in her class’ victory.

“It was awesome,” Shah said. “I was nervous at first, but after I was hitting, it just came to me so easily.”

For the second round, the seniors and sophomores went head to head, with the seniors emerging victorious. Therefore, the final round pitted the seniors against the freshmen, ending with a tie.

In between rounds of the Three-Point Contest, the dance and cheer teams performed routines for the school. According to dance team member Natalie Ho, lots of preparation went into their performance.

“This one [routine] took extra time and it took about two weeks to clean it and to choreograph and run the choreography,” Ho said.

Ho said she was impressed with the amount of support the team received from the student body during their performance.

“I was really nervous at first, but everyone was cheering, so it was so nice,” Ho said.

Senior Lucia Dong who expressed her approval of the experience, particularly enjoyed the new setup that the rally had to offer.

“In the gym it is more closed so you can see all the grades at once,” Dong said. “It just seems more spirited than being outside in the dark.”

Senior Tanli Su agreed with Dong, yet fondly remembers the night rallies of past years.

“I also think that the night rally was really special because we had glow in the dark stuff and the hamster ball was really fun,” Su said. “I think both are special in their own ways.”
